BOB Propagation in an Enclosed Space - Checking on the Bees - The First Day

Updated: Feb 22, 2020

Previously we set up the greenhouse (Site1a2g) as an enclosed space with supplemental/augmenting resources (pollen, sugar water, "mud"). Then we released the bees, actually placed the cocoons, on Wednesday morning, the 19th of February.

Now on Thursday the 20th we are checking the status of the bees, cocoon, and our enclosed space. In Part 1, we adjust the door to the greenhouse and replenish the sugar water, plain water and "mud":

In addition, we noted that the 3 or 4 bees that we saw yesterday were "gone". We found one of the bee bodies. We assume that these were the males that emerged during shipping and could not survive the lack of food and water.

In Part 2, we examine the contents of the tubes:

We found that two of the PVC tubes had one 'hatched' bee each waiting for the temperature to warm up enough (mid 50s deg F) to fly out. The third tube had five 'hatched' bees. We replaced the cocoons and bees back into the tubes. Later in the day, about 1:15 pm we did observe bees flying around in the enclosure, see end of next video.

We also made some adjustments to our Wansview Q5 video camera:

We will continue to monitor the status regularly and are planning to replicate the setup WITHOUT the enclosure at the herb garden immediately adjacent to the greenhouse.
