We placed 7,500 leaf cutter bee cocoons at the residential lot in Gilbert. We are monitoring the status regularly. We visually inspect the site, monitor the temperature and humidity and observe the coming and going of the bees after they emerge into and out of the habitats. We also placed a small number at Gene's house on Catamaran, Site 1a1. Gene has noticed significant activity especially in the filling of the small habitat he has.
So far, the results have not been very promising. The 7,500 cocoons at the residential lot in Gilbert started out great. But then a heat spell (temperatures of 118F = 48C) slowed down all the activity. We had slightly better results at the other residential lot in Gilbert. We saw the small wooden habitat half filled in a few days.
The results at the Master Garden in Flowing Springs are disappointing. We see no emergence, no tube filled and no evidence of leaf cutter activity on any of the resident plants. You can see our reports here:
