First Distribution of Bees-Next Day with Bees Emerging and Bird Danger

Updated: Oct 11, 2019

Yesterday we did our first distribution of bees at a lake side residential lot in the Phoenix area (Site1a2). Today the bees have started to emerge at Site1a2b:

Yes, and that is bee poop, meconium, see above and this video:

From the Crown Bees FAQ, "Once out of their cocoons, the bees clean themselves, warm up, and release their first waste - a tan substance that is called meconium. When you see these small tan dots on your bee house it's a good indicator that the mason bees hatched and took flight. People often mistake the meconium for fungus but there is nothing to worry about and only the freshly emerged adult bees produce meconium."

And we prepared and distributed the “mud” using potters clay in a stand alone clay pot on a table and in a hole in the ground beneath the crepe myrtle. We intend to monitor the clay pot to see if it us used by the bees.

And we had our first ‘bird danger’. A bird was perched on top of Site1a2b. Here is the bird in the palm tree later.

We covered the Site with a box which we shortly removed for fear that the bees would not be able to return to their known habitat.
