Now that we have significant bee activity at our Gilbert Site1a2h, we will be monitoring the progress as they fill the habitat tubes.
We have updated the Home page, to include an overall status for the two sites in Gilbert and Payson/Flowing Springs. Here was the initial status:
The number of tubes filled increased substantially to 120. Note that we have also started counting the filled tubes on the "back side" of the large, main habitat. This increased the "MaxValue" of tubes (to 3458); decreasing the "Tubes Filled/Tubes Placed" percentage. The intent of this metric is to ensure that we have enough tubes available so that any bee that wants to nest has an available space.
The other metric, "Tubes Filled/Female Bees" is the critical measure. To ensure a sustainable population, we need this metric to bee greater than 2. Actually it must be greater than two to account for losses due to predators, accidents and many other loss factors. We will discuss this in more detail in an upcoming post.
Here's some video of our latest count on 6 June 2020.
Note that our latest check on Site3a8 in Payson/Flowing Springs has shown that the bees there have NOT emerged from the cocoons. We are still waiting.
And this is the anniversary of D Day.
