The last of the four fruits aborted this week -- so we are done for this growing season.
What happened?
Heat: Two months of well over 90F heat every day, with virtually no monsoon storms to cool it all down, as is normal. After a cold and sometimes snowy May.
Then we can speculate endlessly on other potential causes: Too much water on one of the plants? Too much nitrogen? Too much love?
Virtually all other giant pumpkin growers in the area report the same results, mostly with no or few female flowers even this late in the season, and virtually no fruit produced.
Our plants grew to about 1/4 of the vine spread that we would have expected in a normal season.
The problem seems to be regional.
So we’re done with the fruit growing for this year.
But not out.
