Yesterday, we placed 'a quart' of leaf cutter bee cocoons and a habitat in the residential lot in Gilbert, Arizona; Site1a2h. Now we're going to place the same at the Master Garden in Flowing Springs located five miles north of Payson, Arizona.
We transported the quart of leaf cutter cocoons in a Styrofoam cooler to ensure that the bees did not emerge during the trip.
Later that day we added some chicken wire to protect against predators such as birds or rodents.
The next morning we checked on the cocoons and habitats and learned that we had to make some adjustments. We noted the presence of ants so we moved the cocoons onto a wire support that also allows more shade from the sun.
