Previously, we had a bird sitting on one of the habitats looking hungry as the bees emerge from the PVC pipe. It is happening again so we will install chicken wire, which we always planned to do, now.
Chicken wire protects against birds at both ends of the life cycle. As they first come out the bees are vulnerable to bird predators. From the link: "Birds--Long-beaked birds, like woodpeckers, will pull out and tear apart straws to eat mason bee larvae. Birds also feast on flying mason bees, and hover near shelters to catch and eat returning mason bees.Louvered covers, screen (hardware cloth), or chicken wire over mason bee shelters will prevent birds from eating mason bees. "
Both Site1a2 sites are now covered:
There is still room at the bottom to reach into retrieve the temperature and humidity logger.
